The Best Online Games for Speech Therapy

What is an online game for speech therapy?

An online game for speech therapy is simply a game that you access through your web browser on an application on your device. Online speech therapy games are most commonly accessed on a computer or a tablet.

Types of Online Games

Online speech therapy games can either directly or indirectly address a speech and language skill. In an in-person setting, an example of a game that directly addresses speech and language goals would be Feed the Monster where speech sounds are directly targeted because that is what the game was designed to do. An example of a game that indirectly addresses speech and language skills would be something like the game Find the Difference. That is because this game wasn’t necessarily developed to address speech and language skills, but it easily can be done with a little instruction and modification from a skilled SLP.

Indicators of an Online Game that’s Great for Speech Therapy

You want to look for games that are:

  • ad-free
  • consistently working without any issues or hangs
  • on sites with reputable customer service in the case that issues do arise
  • colorful and engaging

I always suggest screening games prior to using them in a speech session just to make sure they are appropriate from start to finish. In addition to the criteria above, you of course want to choose something that either directly or indirectly addresses the speech and language goals you’re working on. There are many games out there, but there are fewer online speech therapy games. You want to pick a game that either directly targets a skill or can be tailored to target a skill. Otherwise, the game is just a time-filler and you’re not actually addressing speech or language through the use of the game.

Are these only for teletherapy?

Definitely not! While online speech therapy materials can be great for teletherapy, they are also a great way to boost student engagement during in-person speech therapy sessions as well. Many Digital SLP members report that after initially using these resources for teletherapy, they also found them to be extremely helpful for providing open-and-go in-person sessions that their students were really excited about. Digital speech therapy games and resources can easily be pulled up on a tablet or computer. You can have different resources open in different tabs to address different goals. When working with mixed groups, you can also choose activities that address multiple speech and language goals within one resource.

Other resources that are similar

There are many online speech therapy resources that aren’t exactly a game, but are still interactive and similar to a game. For example, online speech therapy word searches or matching games. Some other online speech therapy activities that are out there are:

  • sequencing
  • digital flashcards
  • drag and drop
  • multiple choice
  • true and false
  • open-ended picture description scenes

The Best Online Games and Activities for Speech Therapy

The best online resource is going to be something that:

  • your student will engage with
  • doesn’t distract your student to the point that they won’t participate in an interactive way
  • is easy and enjoyable for the SLP to use

Best is subjective, of course, but I would like to share my favorite digital speech therapy games and activities with you. Below this list, I’ve put together some quick videos to show you some of these resources in action:
