One of the most important qualities you can teach to a child is gratitude. The quality of being thankful and returning kindness will give your students a very important skill that will be beneficial for the rest of their lives.
As Thanksgiving approaches, I reflect on what it means to be grateful. This is a great time of year to teach gratitude to kids! In this blog post, I’ve chosen five short videos that center around the teachings of gratitude. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
1. The Gratitude Experiment – What a wonderful experiment! This video explains how science has proven that showing gratitude increases your overall sense of well being. There are also instructions on how to experiment with gratitude through journaling that you can modify and try with your students.
2. What Is Gratitude? – This video is excellent for younger students. Kids can learn and distinguish between a good and a bad attitude. The video teaches young children how to be grateful for things by thinking positively, even through their own mistakes!
3. How To Talk With Kids About Gratitude – I recommend SLP’s sending this video out to parents to supplement a lesson on gratitude. It comes from the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley. The animation is simple, narration is thorough, and the information on what science has proven when kids practice gratitude is covered in this video.
4. Kids With Character: Gratitude – This video is one of my favorites! Greatschools.org put together this short video documenting the power of gratitude through a very special little girl. It is truly fantastic and I absolutely love this short video and its message.
5. A Valuable Lesson On Being Thankful – This last video is very appropriate for older students who can read, as well as follow visual slide changes. The video takes you through a story about a father and a son. It is quite compelling throughout and will make you think twice the next time you start to feel ungrateful. It’s probably not something you would want to show to students who are extremely sensitive, so please keep that in mind.
