This is the first post for my “sign of the week” series. I’m going to start the series with some of the signs that I find to be the most functional. I started signing with my daughter when she was about 7 months old. Signing has been so helpful for giving her a means to communicate some of her basic wants and needs.
The first sign I’d like to introduce is the sign, help. It is one of my favorite signs because it is so functional! This was also one of my daugther’s first signs. It definitely came in handy (and still does) when she needed something. She only uses one hand to sign for help, so this is NOT what the sign help actually looks like, it is only her approximated version of it.
To correctly make this sign: Give a thumbs up with one hand, and place it on top of the flat palm of your other hand. Then, lift up. You can see an example in a video by Signing Safari by clicking the link below:
