This podcast episode explores accessible options for bringing nature into speech therapy sessions when it isn’t possible or practical to bring students or clients outdoors.
The episode was inspired by the practice of forest bathing, which originated in Japan and is also known as shinrin-yoku. It involves slowing down and focusing on nature as a sensory experience. Even though it’s called forest bathing, it doesn’t actually require a forest–it can be as simple as observing a tree in a parking lot.
Researchers have found that connecting with nature provides many benefits for students, including:
- Better attention
- Less stress
- Increased self-discipline
- Increased motivation
- Increased enjoyment and engagement
- More physical activity
- More supportive learning contexts
- Higher academic achievement
- More cooperative relationships
In today’s episode, I highlight simple ideas for bringing nature into speech therapy sessions, including:
- Forest bathing adapted for an indoor context
- Virtual forest bathing
- Nature photography
- Nature-focused books
- Nature poetry
- Nature art projects
