This week, I’m really excited to share what I’ve been up to. A couple of months ago, Jenna Rayburn from Speech Room News posted about one of her new products, SpeechTube. I was so intrigued by this fun and original idea, and I knew it would be a great addition to my treatment materials. I’ve been using it in my sessions lately and I wanted to share:
SpeechTube has been a real hit! For some clients, I found it beneficial to fill out an example of the “Write A Review” page. Given how difficult it is for some of them to express their opinions (verbally), I found the star rating a really great way to illustrate different levels of liking/disliking something. Once we rated a few general items (foods, daily activities, etc.) they quickly picked up on how the rating system worked and seemed to really enjoy using it.
The vocabulary activities were great because I could use the words in context, relative to the clip we had just watched. I find it so much easier for kids to grasp concepts of new vocabulary words when you have live examples for them. I found that the “Start A Conversation” activity was so helpful for my kids on the spectrum. They have such a hard time making relevant comments and initiating a conversation, so this was a really great way for them to practice. I even sent a copy of a blank one home for homework, suggesting that they come up with even more comments about the video and bring them back to discuss.
It was easy to sneak a little articulation in too! It really gave us a great way to work on producing target words at the conversation level as we used them during our discussion about the video.
Each video has the following sections:
- Conversation Questions
- Vocabulary Matching
- Vocab Sentence Generation
- Articulation (words)
- Articulation (sentences)
- Summarizing
- Start A Conversation
- Write A Review
- Sequencing
- Parts of Speech Search
- Story Graphic Organizer
- Describe and Draw the Character
This activity is truly brilliant because it incorporates language in so many ways, while still managing to keep kids interested! You can get your own copy of Speech Tube: A Speech and Language Companion Packet, here.
